What Do These Offices Do?

The 2022 Midterm elections will have many offices on the ballot, and learning the responsibilities and duties of each office is useful for understanding their importance. Below is each office briefly explained.

Senate

The Senate takes action on bills, resolutions, amendments, motions, nominations, and treaties by voting. Senators vote in a variety of ways, including roll call votes, voice votes, and unanimous consent.

House of Representatives

The U.S. House of Representatives makes up one half of the federal legislative branch, alongside the U.S. Senate. The House is composed of 435 representatives, divided to proportionally represent each state's population. Each representative serves a 2 year term, meaning all 14 representatives for Georgia are up for election this November.

Governor

The governor is the state's chief executive, which oversees the executive branch, the chief law enforcement officer, and the commander-in-chief of the state’s military forces.

Lieutenant Governor

The Lieutenant Governor is the second highest elected official in the state and the President of the Senate. In the event that the Governor is incapacitated, the Lieutenant Governor exercises those executive powers until either the Governor's recovery or the expiration of the gubernatorial term.

Secretary of State

The Georgia Secretary of State registers voters, tracks annual corporate filings, grants professional licenses, and oversees the state's securities market.

Attorney General

The Attorney General is the chief legal adviser for the Governor, state agencies, boards, and commissions. The office represents the State of Georgia in all civil cases before any court and in all cases before the United States Supreme Court. The Attorney General also prepares contracts and agreements and prosecutes public corruption cases.

Agriculture Commissioner

The state agriculture commissioner is responsible for the farming and food production of the state. They also oversee forestry, pest control, food safety, and even state agricultural events for their constituents.

Insurance Commissioner

The Insurance Commissioner heads the office of insurance which licenses and regulates insurance companies; ensures that insurance rates, rules, and forms comply with state law; investigates suspicions of insurance fraud; and conducts inspections of buildings and houses to prevent fire outbreaks.

State School Superintendent

The State School Superintendent oversees the Georgia Department of Education which regulates public education throughout the state, ensuring that laws and regulations pertaining to education are followed and that state and federal.

Commissioner of Labor

The Commissioner of Labor oversees the Georgia Department of Labor, which matches qualified job seekers with employers, and collects data to help businesses, economic developers, planners, and the workforce make quality work-related decisions.
